Historic Sites

New Jersey is a state full of history. There are many places to visit that showcase this. I personally enjoy visiting Smithville, the Cape May Lighthouse, SS Atlantus, and a WWII lookout tower.

Smithville is in Galloway, NJ, right near Stockton University. This small town is open every day all year round. Walk along the cobblestone pathways and bridges and you will be sent back in time. There are a total of 60 shops to visit and enjoy. Each store has a small business and homey feel. smithville started at the Historic Smithville Inn in 1787. They offer a sophisticated dining experience. They also have the Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast where they recommend spending at least two nights. This ensures that you can experience everything the town has to offer.

Every weekend, Smithville has an array of events that can be participated in. one of my favorites is the Renaissance Fair. The next one is Saturday, April 27th and Sunday, April 28th. They also have a carousel, train, paddle boats, and archery. The paddle boats are in Lake Meone which is at the center of the town. At night, the lake is beautiful and breathtaking. Each of the shops have lights decorating the building and to see them reflected in the lake is stunning.

I also enjoy visiting the Cape May lighthouse. It was build in 1859 and has aided many mariners. It opened to the public in 1988. More than 2.5 million people have visited the lighthouse. Nearby there is the shipwreck of the SS Atlantus. This ship was one of the twelve concrete ships that were build by the Liberty Ship Building Company. It was constructed during World War I.

Right across the way is a World War II lookout tower. It is known as Fire Control Tower No. 23. It was built in 1942 and was one of 15 towers that aided in aiming batteries of coastal artilleryToday, it is the last one standing.

New Jersey has so much history to see and experience. Come visit the beautiful state and ravel back in time.
